The “Show” – Springdell Summer CSA Pickup #5

Hi everyone Jess here!

“Jess, why are you posting your show on Sunday when your pickup day is Monday“, you ask? Because I’m taking advantage of this amazing farm option called “Sunday Opt-In” that Springdell has for those that can’t make their scheduled pickup day, and can’t find someone to trade with for a different day. This is an incredibly generous option for those who are taking previously scheduled vacations or business trips.

Here’s how it’s working in my case:  Tomorrow (Monday) is my regularly scheduled pickup day, but I’ll be away tomorrow.  I’ve been unable to find someone to swap shares with (mostly because I have the add-ons). “Sunday Opt-In” allows me to pick up my share on Sunday instead of Monday!  I have the choice of picking up my share either the Sunday before, or the Sunday after my regularly scheduled pickup date!

There are a few rules that go with “Sunday Opt-In”:

  • Sunday is the only day you can do this.  (No swapping from Monday to Tuesday, for example.)
  • It has to be the Sunday before, OR the Sunday after your missed scheduled pickup. (There is a “vacation hold” option for longer scheduled vacations, but you’ll have to talk to Jamie about this.)
  • You have to notify the farm at least a week in advance of your regularly scheduled pickup date to give your farmers enough time to account for your veggies in their weekly planning.

Since I did the Sunday Opt-In this week, I’m picking up my share a day early (and technically repeating week #4), so it will look a bit different from the shares most of you will get this week, so keep that in mind as you read on.

I picked up some broccoli leaves from the farm stand because I haven’t had any in my share box yet and because I did a Sunday Opt-in, I didn’t want to miss out on the fun of trying something new! From what I hear, they taste a lot like broccoli except you can stuff them with yummy things! I see some sort of “reverse broccoli and cheese casserole” dish in our future.

I also grabbed some of that limited edition goat chorizo which I can’t wait to try!

As I was taking my pics at the farm today, I noticed a furry little guy in the background…

This is Radar, Jamie’s newest edition to the farm family, munching on an ear of corn.  Looks like he’s going to fit right in!

I wanted to mention there is an open house this coming Wednesday at the Westford Community Gardens. Swing by and check out what all the hub bub is about!

I look forward to cooking with you this week.  Keep those ideas coming, and I’ll do the same.
