Crockpot Apple Butter

image

Do any of you guys have apples taking over your counters?  We never let veggies (or fruits) go unloved here at CSA365 so it’s time to make apple butter!  Prepping the apples is pretty much the only thing you have to do for this one, time and the crockpot do the rest.  Here is what you need to gather:

  • 14 apples, I like to mix varieties
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • fresh nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla

Go ahead and peel and quarter your apples.  Seriously, this is it, this is all the work right here.  You can do it!  Oh, and there will be no need to light any candles in your house tonight, I will naturally smell like fall!

Put the cover on the apples and let it cook on low for 6 hours.

Uncover the apples, add the vanilla.

Add all of the other ingredients.

Give it a stir.  The apples will already be tender so they will begin to fall apart and be the consistency of a very chunky applesauce.

Cover and set the crockpot on low and let it go for another 8 hours.  I actually set it to continue cooking overnight.

Awesome!  The last step is to let some of the excess liquid evaporate.  Remove the cover and let it cook for another 2 hours on high.  This will let the liquid evaporate more and become that buttery texture we are looking for.

Final product, fall on a spoon.  Apple butter is great on pancakes, waffles, rice cakes, toast etc. etc. Be creative and use this beautiful spread on anything you’d like.

Option 1: You can store the butter when cooled in a jar for about 2 weeks, or can it properly, I just didn’t have time.

Option 2: freeze the butter in bags, freezing is always my go to.

Enjoy!
