The Springdell Show and Tell – Fall Bridge CSA Pickup #3

Hello everyone, Jess here with the 3rd CSA pickup of the Fall Season. The chill is in the air, and the cool-weather comfort produce is here! The farm is switching into it’s November routine and hours, and the new Fall Bridge CSA is moving into the farm stand to avoid any wind/cold damage to the produce that might otherwise happen in the former pickup spot. Really, I don’t know how Farmer Jamie does it all, but like most of us, I’m grateful that she does! Look at this beautiful share.

  • Apples– We tried some Apple Cider Cookies this week that were pretty tasty (see below), and Pork Chops with Apples and Onions were also on the dinner menu.
  • TurnipThis week’s crunchy sweet turnip has a date with the box grater. The shredded turnip will be one of the many toppings to choose from for what has become a pandemic tradition in our household- Taco Tuesdays. I was hoping to try out an Apple Turnip Pot Pie recipe from a fellow CSA blogger, but that may have to wait. If the raw and/or apple-turnip combo isn’t your thing, try the Turnip Soufflé or Creamy Turnip Soup!
  • Brussels Sprouts– Our house is currently enjoying these roasted with a simple apple cider glaze and some bacon ends tossed in (cider is just reduced in a saucepan about 50%- or until glazy). You can also enjoy them raw in a salad! In case you missed it last week, here’s a tested recipe for the Brussels Sprouts averse.
  • CarrotsThis week’s rainbow carrots are small and snackable!
  • Pie Pumpkin– Slated for Pumpkin Fondue, see below. Your pumpkin will wait patiently until you’re ready, so I suggest eating some of the more perishable parts of the CSA first (I know I know, it’s hard to wait!)
  • Cauliflower– We went for a change from our usual Buffalo Cauliflower and General Tso’s Cauliflower this week and went for the Cheesy Cauliflower. My kids were rather lukewarm about it, but it was worth a try.
  • Beets– These went straight from the CSA box to the oven, wrapped in foil and roasted for salads. (I’m sorry, guys, beets are a comfort food for me and I may never get to the beet cookies at this rate… Please feel free to go on without me, and let me know how it goes!)
  • SpinachI will pair these with beets, shred the spinach for a Taco Tuesday topping, and generally enjoy as a simple side as long as the appeal will last for my kids. Try a variation on this Spinach Dip with turnip instead of radish!
Pumpkin Fondue. It’s already been featured on the blog a couple of times this season, but it’s just too darn good not to. Many variations exist, I haven’t found one yet that I didn’t like.
A quick and messy one-pot meal is Pork Chops with Apples and Onions, or try this Cooking Light version with Brussels Sprouts!
A nice sheet pan roast of veggies, here, apples onions and Brussels sprouts are ready for some cider glaze (again, cider is brought just to a bubble and then simmered in a saucepan until reduced about 50%- or until glazy). It’s not pictured (because this photo is from a time when I didn’t know any better) , but lining your sheet with parchment paper before roasting your sheet pan veggies will save you some clean-up time later on.
My littlest one and I tried these Apple Cider Cookies for his “Homeschool Store”, (where our little pod practices business skills by selling things to each other with funny money). We will be making another batch this week with some changes (less sugar, more apple, ample time for the butter to soften, etc…) We’ll report back about how it goes!

Meanwhile, I hope you have a wonderful week. Hang in there and if you can, hunker down with a hearty soup or a baked apple, treat yourself! See you back here soon.
